🍳 Cooking Fire Safety

Cooking is the #1 Cause of Home Fires in Ontario

Unattended cooking is the leading cause of residential fires and fire-related injuries. Most cooking fires start on the stovetop and can spread quickly. The good news? They’re entirely preventable.

πŸ”₯ Top Cooking Safety Tips

  • Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave, turn off the stove.
  • Keep flammable items away from the stovetop β€” dish towels, paper towels, packaging, and curtains.
  • Turn pot handles inward so they can’t be knocked over or grabbed by children.
  • Use a timer when baking or simmering food to remind you it’s on.
  • Wear short or tight-fitting sleeves when cooking β€” loose clothing can catch fire.
  • Keep kids and pets away from the cooking area β€” at least 1 metre (3 feet) from the stove.
  • Clean cooking surfaces regularly to prevent grease buildup.

πŸ”₯ What To Do If a Cooking Fire Starts

Grease Fire on the Stove:

  • DO NOT use water – it can cause the fire to spread.

  • Carefully slide a lid over the pan to smother the flames.

  • Turn off the burner and let the pan cool completely before removing the lid.

Oven or Microwave Fire:

  • Keep the door closed. Turn off the heat or unplug the appliance.

  • Call 911 if you are unsure or if the fire spreads.
