π³ Cooking Fire Safety
Cooking is the #1 Cause of Home Fires in Ontario
Unattended cooking is the leading cause of residential fires and fire-related injuries. Most cooking fires start on the stovetop and can spread quickly. The good news? They’re entirely preventable.
π₯ Top Cooking Safety Tips
- Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave, turn off the stove.
- Keep flammable items away from the stovetop β dish towels, paper towels, packaging, and curtains.
- Turn pot handles inward so they canβt be knocked over or grabbed by children.
- Use a timer when baking or simmering food to remind you itβs on.
- Wear short or tight-fitting sleeves when cooking β loose clothing can catch fire.
- Keep kids and pets away from the cooking area β at least 1 metre (3 feet) from the stove.
- Clean cooking surfaces regularly to prevent grease buildup.
