Fire Inspections

Fire inspections are a vital part of ensuring public safety. The goal of the inspection program is to help identify and correct fire hazards, enforce fire code regulations, and promote fire safety awareness for building owners, businesses, and residents.

Authority to Inspect

Under the Ontario Fire Protection and Prevention Act (FPPA) and the Ontario Fire Code, Fire Prevention Officers have the legal authority to enter and inspect properties to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations.

Types of Fire Inspections

🔹 Routine/Proactive Inspections

  • Conducted on a regular schedule based on building type, occupancy, or risk.

  • Common in assembly occupancies (restaurants, churches), residential buildings, industrial/commercial units, and schools.

🔹 Complaint-Based Inspections

  • Initiated when a fire safety concern is reported by a tenant, employee, or member of the public.

🔹 Request-Based Inspections

  • Owners, property managers, or businesses may request an inspection for compliance verification (e.g., before selling a property, opening a business, or renewing a license).

🔹 Follow-Up Inspections

  • Conducted after an initial inspection to confirm that required corrections or orders have been completed.

🔹 After-Fire Inspections

  • Conducted after a fire incident to determine code violations or contributing fire hazards.

Inspection Orders and Compliance

If violations are found during an inspection:

  • A Fire Code Inspection Order may be issued with a compliance deadline.

  • Failing to comply may lead to fines or prosecution under the Fire Code.

  • Fire Prevention Officers will work with property owners to support compliance.
